Ahead of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”‘s worldwide premiere, director George Miller believes that while it is difficult to foretell how a picture will come out when stepping into the plot, one hopes that it signifies something to the audience.
The film, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, is the follow-up to Miller’s dystopian “Mad Max” series. It narrates the origin story of Furiosa, a character that Miller first presented with Charlize Theron in the megahit “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015).
“You are unable to predict the outcome. In an interview, Miller stated, “You can imagine what you want it to be, but as you go through the process, piece by piece, the mosaic comes together, and you end up with the film that you hope means something to an audience.”
In the film, which had its global debut at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday and garnered a standing ovation that lasted for more than seven minutes, Taylor-Joy has replaced Theron. The movie opens everywhere on May 23.
The 79-year-old Australian director, who is regarded as one of the most inventive and genre-bending of today, stated that he set out to create a story with “Fury Road” that was a continuous chase while also picking up all the unfinished business from the Mel Gibson-starring films “Mad Max” (1979), “Mad Max 2” (1981), and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” (1985).
Miller stated he made the decision to revive the franchise in 2015 because “the tools of filmmaking are quite different in the digital age.” Miller is also known for the animated films “Happy Feet,” “Baby,” and “Three Thousand Years of Longing.”
He remarked, “I thought you could do things that you could never do in the past,” and that since “most stories are allegorical and somehow interact with the zeitgeist,” he wanted to create a work in which the fight was human.
throughout this instance, the five women were essentially the breeding material of a despot named Immortan Joe, who was sitting atop the ladder of domination and possessing all of the wealth of the wasteland, as has frequently happened throughout history. The two most valuable currencies are searching for heirs and water. It’s a tale that has been told repeatedly throughout history in all civilizations,” he remarked.
According to the director, Furiosa sprang from the notion of a female hero who would save these five spouses from Immortan Joe.
“The story would be quite different if it were a female warrior taking them away than if it was a male warrior. Thus, that’s how Furiosa came to be. We then had to go back to her past. She is taking them where? She is bringing them to Green Place of Many Mothers, the location that used to be her home.”
The upcoming movie will depict Furiosa’s early years, including how she fights to return home after being taken from it at a young age.
Miller claimed that because his action is always based in the plot, “Fury Road” and “Furiosa” both unfold in distinct ways.
“This concept is not a competition where you strive to outdo yourself. The greatest technique to depict each scene or occurrence will be revealed when you keep returning to the story’s dynamics and how it is progressing. Consequently, it doesn’t say, “Oh, let’s top the action that we’re doing in another action movie.” The tale is always the focus.”
While the action in “Fury Road” was set in real time during extended set pieces, the events in “Furiosa” span more than eighteen years, starting from the time the 10-year-old girl is taken from her family and ending when she becomes Furiosa, a road warrior.
It has an alternative rhythm. A symphony, if it were music, would have a different structure than this one. The narrative constantly determines the course of action.”
Movie legend now includes tales of friction between Theron and her “Fury Road” co-star Tom Hardy. Both performers subsequently acknowledged the tension, and even Miller has discussed it in interviews.
Regarding “Furiosa,” Miller is all love for Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth, saying that the “Thor” star’s Dementus is “still very handsome” in spite of his aquiline nose.
After seeing his actors perform their roles, the director said that it was “weird” to see them in real life.
In many ways, this is a timeless narrative. Despite taking place in the future, the novel revisits historical behaviors. However, since it’s also about our period, the characters can’t only be modern.”
He claimed that Taylor-Joy possesses a certain mystique and resoluteness.
“She is capable of being fierce whenever it’s needed.”
Miller claims that Hemsworth, who portrays the flamboyant leader of a crazy gang of motorcyclists, possesses a hint of that insanity.
“As a person, he’s incredibly complex and wise for a young man, and he applies it to both his personal and professional life. Like Anya, he had a very personal comprehension of the story and was aware of all its nuances.
Because they both had to be worthy of each other as enemies in this scenario, they were fascinating collaborators and produced amazing ideas. And I’m glad to report that during the filming of the movie, all of that was made clear,” Miller stated.
